He made them icons and as a result became a television icon himself. Syndication turned his two major successes into TV institutions with cultural relevance. He wrote the theme song for three of his shows: Gilligan's Island (co-wrote), It's About Time, and The Brady Bunch. He went on to create and produce Gilligan's Island and The Brady Bunch. From 1956 to 1962, Schwartz was head writer for The Red Skelton Show, for which he won an Emmy Award in 1961. While serving, he was a writer on the Armed Forces Radio Network before he got his break in television. Schwartz served in the United States Army for over four years. He went on to write for Ozzie Nelson's The Adventures of Ozzie and Harriet and other radio shows. Schwartz had hoped to become a doctor, but found that he was unable to be admitted to medical school at that time, due to a quota limiting the number of Jewish students. Sherwood Schwartz is the uncle of Douglas Schwartz (who created the Baywatch TV series), Bruce Schwartz and Judithe Randall. His younger brother, Elroy Schwartz (1923-2013), a comedy writer, became a principal screenwriter for Gilligan's Island and other series. He was a younger brother of writer Al Schwartz. His parents were Herman and Rose Schwartz. Schwartz was born in Passaic, New Jersey, to a Jewish family. That same year, Schwartz was also inducted into the Television Hall of Fame. On March 7, 2008, Schwartz, at the time still active in his 90s, was honored with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. He worked on radio shows in the 1940s, but he now is best known for creating the 1960s television series Gilligan's Island on CBS and The Brady Bunch on ABC. All in all, "Gilligan's Island" is just pure clean fun, which is more than I can say for shows on today.Sherwood Charles Schwartz ( / ʃ w ɔːr t s/ Novem– July 12, 2011) was an American television screenwriter and producer. and Bob Denver and Jim Backus' chemistry with Natalie Shcaffer is perfect. The cast is brilliant in their roles, and the chemistry between Alan Hale Jr. You can't help but like the series (which is more than I can say for "Green Acres" which gets annoying after a few episodes). It's silly, corny, but the cast is just a lovable one. If you're looking for sophisticated humor, this show isn't it. If William Paley's wife hadn't loved Gunsmoke, "Gilligan's Island" would have easily gained at least two more seasons by ratings alone. It beat Bonanza in its first season, and by the end of the third season, it had beat Star Treck, The Monkees, etc. True, you can't take too many clothes on a 3-hour tour realistically, or how in the world can you do everything from build a hut to a lie detector, but can't make a fail-safe raft? The ratings, in all its three seasons, shone high above many shows despite the network's attempt of changing the time slot a few times. I don't know why it is, but I've always had a special place for "Gilligan's Island," it's one of my favorites. I remember when I was little watching the reruns on TNT and TBS, and now own the complete first season on DVD. All right, so "Gilligan's Island" may not be "The Dick Van Dyke Show," or any other sophisticated physical comedy show-but all in all it is just pure fun to watch.
